Overview

There are three driving instructor tests that you must pass to become an Approved Driving Instructor (A.D.I.). You must complete all 3 parts within 2 years of passing part 1. Part 1 can be taken as many times as needed but you are only allowed a maximum of 3 attempts at part 2 and part 3.

Once you have been accepted to start the qualifying process to become a driving instructor by the DVSA and completed your Disclosure and Barring Check you can then get on with the 3 qualifying exams as below.

Part 1 : The Theory Test

This test is split into two sections comprising of:

One hundred multiple choice questions which can be on a wide variety of driving subjects. You must score at least 85 out of 100 to pass.

Fourteen Hazard Perception Clips showing different driving situations where you need to spot the hazards. You must score at least 57 out of 75 to pass.

The cost of this test is £83 and you must pass both parts at the same time.

Part 2 : The Driving Test

This test is an assessment of your driving ability. The standard required is much higher than a normal learner driver test. To pass the test you must be able to:

  1. drive safely in different road and traffic conditions
  2. show that you know The Highway Code by the way you drive

This is split down into 5 sections:

  1. an eyesight check
  2. ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
  3. general driving ability
  4. manoeuvres
  5. independent driving

The test is marked on the same lines as a learner driving test but you are only allowed a maximum of 6 driving faults and no serious faults.

The cost of this test is £111 but you can’t take this test until you have passed part 1.

Part 3 : Test of Instructional Ability

This test is about your ability to instruct a real pupil on a driving lesson whilst being assessed by an examiner. You will be marked on 17 areas of competence that are grouped into 3 categories.

  1. Lesson Planning
  2. Risk Management
  3. Teaching and Learning Strategies

To pass the test you must score highly in all these areas to show you are then competent to instruct people how to drive. This test costs £111 but you cant take this test until you have passed part 2.

On passing your part 3 you can then apply for first ADI license and join the register of approved driving instructors.

"I would like to thank Paul at Bentley School Of Motoring for all his help and patience in helping me become a fully qualified driving instructor. This was a dream job I've wanted to do for many years and it's finally come true. I found Part 3 challenging at times and had days I thought I couldn't do it. Paul was always there to reassure me throughout my training and questions I had no matter how daft I thought they were Paul was there to help. I can't thank Paul enough he took time out for any extra training I required and was always on the other end of a phone when needed."
