There may be occasions where signs or roadmarkings say otherwise so keep scanning and planning on approach.

  • Taking any left exit (first , second etc): Keep to the left lane
  • Going straight ahead: Usually stay in the left lane unless signs say otherwise
  • Turning right or going full circle: Use the right hand lane and keep to the inside of the roundabout.

Here are some examples of how an examiner will give directions on approach to a roundabout:

At the roundabout turn left please (it is the first exit).

At the roundabout follow the road ahead (it is the second exit).

At the roundabout turn right please (it is the third exit).

If you are unsure you can ask the examiner to repeat the directions.

Mini-Roundabouts: Small but Serious

Mini-roundabouts might look less intimidating, but the rules are exactly the same:

  • Give way to the right
  • Use correct positioning
  • Signal appropriately

Because they’re smaller, decisions happen faster—so your observation and timing need to be sharper.

You should go around the white painted circle and not travel over it in normal circumstances.

Be aware of vehicles possibly doing a U turn at mini roundabouts.

Common Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
