The driving instructor tests have a proven and highly successful track record, following a very structured approach to maximise your learning potential.
Driving Instructor Tests Overview
There are three driving instructor tests that you must pass to become an Approved Driving Instructor (A.D.I.). You must complete all 3 parts within 2 years of passing part 1. Part 1 can be taken as many times as needed but you are only allowed a maximum of 3 attempts at part 2 and part 3.
Once you have been accepted to start the qualifying process to become a driving instructor by the DVSA and completed your Disclosure and Barring Check you can then get on with the 3 qualifying exams as below.
his test is split into two sections comprising of:
One hundred multiple choice questions which can be on a wide variety of driving subjects. You must score at least 85 out of 100 to pass.
Fourteen Hazard Perception Clips showing different driving situations where you need to spot the hazards. You must score at least 57 out of 75 to pass.
The cost of this test is £83 and you must pass both parts at the same time.

This test is an assessment of your driving ability. The standard required is much higher than a normal learner driver test. To pass the test you must be able to:
- drive safely in different road and traffic conditions
- show that you know The Highway Code by the way you drive
This is split down into 5 sections:
- an eyesight check
- ‘show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
- general driving ability
- manoeuvres
- independent driving
The test is marked on the same lines as a learner driving test but you are only allowed a maximum of 6 driving faults and no serious faults.
The cost of this test is £111 but you can’t take this test until you have passed part 1.

This test is about your ability to instruct a real pupil on a driving lesson whilst being assessed by an examiner. You will be marked on 17 areas of competence that are grouped into 3 categories.

- Risk Management
- Teaching and Learning Strategies
To pass the test you must score highly in all these areas to show you are then competent to instruct people how to drive. This test costs £111 but you cant take this test until you have passed part 2.

On passing your part 3 you can then apply for first ADI license and join the register of approved driving instructors.
